At the request of our UCSB campus, researchers in the Holden Lab are sampling the Goleta Beach surf zone, and sediments that are being disposed there, following the catastrophic January 9th Montecito debris flow which led to permitted disposal of resultant sediments to Goleta Beach. Starting on January 18th, our work involves sampling and analysis towards determining the nature of microbiological contamination: of human origin, and with the potential to cause disease? Once the disposal stops, we aim to chart the pattern of pollutant attenuation. Full funding is being sought for this research.
